Slovakia expands energy storage, cross‑border grid and modernises Košice tram line

Slovakia is advancing several infrastructure projects aimed at strengthening its energy and transport networks. A new 20 MW/20 MWh battery storage facility near Nižná, built by ZSE, will help balance supply from renewable sources by storing excess electricity and releasing it during peak demand.

A planned high‑voltage transmission line linking Austria and Germany will replace an existing 220‑kV line with a 380‑kV corridor, increasing capacity from about 800 MW to roughly 6 000 MW. Austrian Power Grid estimates the line could cut Austria’s winter electricity costs by €240‑€375 million by enabling cheaper German power imports.

The city of Košice has launched a public tender worth €55.4 million to fully modernise its tram corridor on Alejová Street. The upgrade will replace ageing tracks, add shelters and real‑time information displays, and improve safety and comfort for passengers, with construction expected to start next year.
