Slovakia launches renewable energy credit system for EV charging

Slovakia has introduced a new market tool designed to increase the value of electric vehicle (EV) charging. Starting in September, charging station operators can earn credits for every kilowatt-hour of electricity from renewable sources delivered to an EV battery.

These credits can be sold to fuel suppliers, who are legally required to increase the share of renewable energy in transport from 9.5% this year to 27% by 2030. The system is operated by the Short-term Electricity Market Organizer (OKTE). The price of these transferable electronic credits is determined by market agreement between buyers and sellers rather than the state.

Operators can generate credits either through a direct connection between renewable production and the charger or by drawing green electricity from the grid using guarantees of origin. This system applies to both public and private charging, including corporate fleets.
