Slovakia mandates streaming services to fund domestic content
A new amendment to the Audiovisual Fund Act in Slovakia requires international streaming platforms, such as Netflix, Disney+, and Amazon Prime Video, to contribute to the support of domestic content creation.
Under the approved legislation, platforms can fulfill these obligations through various methods, including direct investments in local productions, acquiring licenses for works in the Slovak language, or funding the development of Slovak-language versions of foreign content. There are specific limits on these contributions: language-related adjustments are capped at 10% of total direct investments, and versions utilizing generative artificial intelligence for voiceovers are further restricted to a 5% limit.
While the law aims to direct both public and private resources toward high-quality domestic production, the amendment does not mandate specific subscription price increases. Any adjustments to consumer pricing will remain at the discretion of the individual streaming companies.
