Slovakia: Michal Šimečka claims Fico coalition has collapsed

Michal Šimečka, leader of the Progressive Slovakia (PS) party, has claimed that Robert Fico’s governing coalition has effectively collapsed. He argued that the current administration lacks the legitimacy to make major financial decisions or commit to large-scale long-term projects.

Šimečka urged the government to refrain from signing costly contracts or initiating significant projects—such as those involving defense procurement, nuclear power, or irrigation projects involving the United Arab Emirates—without consulting the opposition and experts. He warned that such decisions would burden future governments and citizens with debt.

Additionally, Šimečka criticized the fragmentation of the coalition, noting that while it began with three parties (Smer, Hlas, and SNS), the current structure has become overly complex. He called on ministers to focus on essential state functions, such as preparing the budget, ensuring security, and addressing economic issues, rather than pursuing expensive new ventures.
