Slovakia Očistec case: Defendants request trial for statute-barred acts

In the high-profile Očistec corruption trial, defendants Tibor Gašpar, Norbert Bödör, and Róbert Krajmer have requested that the Specialized Criminal Court (ŠTS) proceed with evidence regarding acts for which prosecution was recently halted due to the statute of limitations.

Defense attorney Marek Para announced that the defendants are waiving their right to appeal the court's decision to stop proceedings for these specific acts. Instead, they seek a direct ruling on their innocence or guilt within the final verdict. While a conviction for these statute-barred acts would not result in a sentence under Slovak law, the defendants maintain their innocence and characterize the proceedings as politically motivated.

The original indictment involves 20 counts, including the formation of a criminal group, bribery, and abuse of power. The trial is currently proceeding with the playback of audio recordings and the scheduled testimony of Peter Petrov, known as Tiger, a key figure in the so-called police war.
