Slovakia pension updates: Eligibility rules for 13th and parental pensions

Pensioners in Slovakia face specific eligibility criteria for the 13th pension and the new parental pension system. To receive the 13th pension in December 2026, an individual must have an active entitlement to one of the Social Insurance Agency's pension types—such as old-age, early old-age, disability, widow, widower, orphan, or social pension—specifically during that month.

Common reasons for missing the 13th pension include delaying a pension application after reaching retirement age or failing to provide proof of study for orphan pensions. For instance, those who reach retirement age but continue working without applying for a pension until January 2027 will not receive the 2026 installment.

Regarding the parental pension, which provides 2% of a child's income tax to their parents, strict assessment rules by the Financial Directorate of the Slovak Republic have excluded many recipients. To qualify, a senior must have officially reached retirement age and been receiving a standard old-age pension by December 31 of the previous year. This requirement has resulted in the exclusion of those on early retirement, disability pensions, or widow/orphan pensions who have not yet reached the standard retirement age.
