Slovakia prepares to revive cooperation commission with Russia

Slovak Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár has held preparatory talks with Russian Minister of Science and Higher Education Valery Falkov to revive the intergovernmental commission for economic and scientific-technical cooperation. The commission, which has not met since 2021, is expected to hold a session in autumn 2026.

Blanár described the move as part of a pragmatic foreign policy aimed at maintaining dialogue with all interested parties to protect Slovakia's national interests and energy stability. Key discussion points include the supply of gas, oil, and nuclear fuel, as well as the management of oil flows through the Druzhba pipeline.

The announcement has drawn sharp criticism from the Slovak opposition. Leaders from Progressive Slovakia and SaS argued that holding such talks during ongoing Russian attacks on Ukraine is inappropriate and suggests a lack of transparency. Critics also raised concerns regarding recent security incidents involving Russian components and the government's stance on EU sanctions.
