Slovakia reports six drownings in Bratislava region over weekend

Over the weekend of June 26‑27, Slovak police recorded six fatal drownings at lakes and reservoirs in the Bratislava region. Victims included two men found dead in the Kuchajda and Veľký Draždiak lakes on Friday, a woman in Čunovo lake and a man near the village of Réca on Saturday, and two men at the Zlaté Piesky recreational area.

The incidents occurred amid a heatwave, and authorities say excessive alcohol consumption, over‑estimation of swimming abilities and sudden temperature shock are common factors. Police and the Slovak Red Cross warned the public to avoid swimming alone, to stay sober, and to keep children under constant supervision. They emphasized that drownings in summer can outnumber road‑traffic fatalities, with 30‑40 deaths per month nationwide, and urged visitors to use guarded bathing sites and wear certified flotation devices.

These deaths add to a series of water‑related fatalities reported in the region over the past few days, bringing the total to at least five victims in a short period and prompting heightened safety alerts from local authorities.
