Slovakia records only nine official meteorites

Only nine meteorites have been officially recorded in Slovakia. These rare occurrences are divided by century: four were found in the 19th century, one in the 20th, and four in the current century.

Juraj Tóth, a researcher at Comenius University, explains that meteorites serve as vital scientific data for understanding the composition of distant asteroids. While space agencies have only brought back samples from asteroids like Itokawa, Bennu, and Ryugu, meteorites act as natural deliveries of cosmic material that scientists must track and study.

One notable example is the Rumanová meteorite, discovered in 1994. Although found relatively recently, the specimen had been resting on the Earth's surface for approximately 12,000 years.
