Slovakia reopens embassy in Algeria to bolster energy ties

Slovakia has officially reopened its embassy in Algeria after a 22-year hiatus, marking a shift in the country’s foreign policy toward Africa and the Indo-Pacific. The reopening was inaugurated by Slovak Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Juraj Blanár and Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmad Attáf.

A primary driver for the renewed diplomatic presence is energy security. As the European Union moves to end Russian gas purchases by September 2027, Algeria has emerged as a critical potential partner. As the EU’s third-largest importer of natural gas, Algeria offers diversification opportunities, with existing pipelines to Italy providing a potential route for gas to reach Slovakia.

Diplomat Marek Murín has been appointed as the new Slovak ambassador to Algeria, with accreditation for Mauritania, Niger, Tunisia, and Senegal. The mission is intended to serve as a hub for economic cooperation, supporting Slovak companies and strengthening bilateral political and multilateral ties.
