Slovakia reports increase in domestic violence cases

According to a 2025 report from the General Prosecutor of the Slovak Republic, domestic violence in the country is on the rise. The most frequent victims are women and children, followed by parents, grandparents, and siblings of the perpetrator.

Data indicates that perpetrators are predominantly men in their productive years, specifically between the ages of 30 and 50. One of the most serious forms of domestic violence identified is the crime of abusing a close person or a dependent person. In 2025, the number of prosecuted individuals for this crime rose by 11.32 percent, increasing from 212 in 2024 to 236 in 2025. Most violence occurred within shared households against partners, children, and parents.

A significant criminogenic factor identified in 35.59 percent of criminal prosecutions was the influence of alcohol and other addictive substances. The report also noted that indictments for abusing close persons rose to 181 in 2025, up from 154 the previous year, with 158 individuals being convicted.
