Slovakia revamps parental leave and self‑employed social insurance rules

From 1 August 2024 the Slovak Social Insurance Agency will simplify the parental care benefit (OČR). Parents will no longer need a doctor’s certificate for a sick child; an electronic request via eZdravie will suffice. The benefit can also be used during school holidays, but only one parent may claim it, for up to 14 days per break. Pediatrician Monika Michňová commented: “It is true that not every child illness requires a doctor visit…”.

A separate reform taking effect on 1 July 2026 changes social‑insurance contributions for self‑employed persons. An income test will exempt entrepreneurs whose earnings are below €2 876.90 (10.5 × the subsistence minimum) from paying contributions. Those who remain liable will pay a reduced monthly premium of €131.34 after a six‑month grace period for new businesses.
