Slovakia seasonal guidance: gardening, lawn care, and bear safety

Various seasonal guidance has been issued for autumn activities in Slovakia, ranging from gardening to wildlife safety.

For gardeners, basil can be preserved through winter by transplanting it from garden beds into indoor pots before temperatures drop below 10 °C. To ensure healthy growth indoors, plants should be placed in bright, south-facing locations with supplemental lighting if necessary, while avoiding contact with cold window glass.

Regarding lawn maintenance, the timing of the final mow depends on grass growth rates rather than a fixed calendar date. It is recommended to leave the grass slightly longer—approximately 4 to 5 centimeters—to protect it from the cold, provided it is not so long that moisture causes it to mat down.

In terms of public safety, the State Nature Conservancy of the Slovak Republic has released an updated map showing brown bear sightings across various districts. This tool helps inform hikers and residents about bear presence near villages and tourist routes. In the event of a close encounter, experts advise increasing distance rather than running, and suggest a passive defense—lying face down and protecting the head and neck—if a physical attack occurs.
