Slovakia Secures Support of 123 Nations for UN Security Council Bid

Slovakia has received written support from 123 of the 193 United Nations member states for its candidacy for a non‑permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2028‑2029 term. Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár announced the backing, describing it as a sign of international confidence in Slovak diplomacy and its commitment to the UN Charter, international law and peaceful conflict resolution. He noted that the campaign involved extensive diplomatic outreach, including meetings with partners at the UN headquarters in New York, in Geneva, and on trips to Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Kenya, Tanzania and Panama. Blanár highlighted Slovakia’s prior experience on the Council, participation in peace operations and work within UN bodies, stressing the country’s readiness to contribute to decisions affecting global security.

The minister emphasized that the support reflects Slovakia’s long‑term, systematic diplomatic efforts and its motto of “Respect, Dialogue, Stability, Peace.” The candidacy will be formally presented at the UN in New York, where Slovakia will outline its priorities for preventing armed conflicts, upholding international law and protecting critical infrastructure.
