Slovakia seeks long‑term gas contracts with Azerbaijan after 2027

A Slovak delegation led by President Petra Pellegrini and Economy Minister Denisa Saková travelled to Azerbaijan to negotiate long‑term natural‑gas supplies for Slovakia after the country stops importing Russian gas in October 2027. The talks focused on securing a five‑ to ten‑year contract for roughly 1.2 billion cubic metres of gas per year, diversifying Slovakia’s energy sources and supporting Azerbaijani investment in expanded production.

During the visit the Slovak team also opened a bilateral business forum in Baku, showcasing 25 Slovak companies in sectors such as energy, infrastructure and IT, and highlighting cooperation on projects like the smart‑village Baš Gadvand in Karabakh. Minister Saková cited the need for stable contracts, quoting the Azerbaijani president: “We cannot invest if contracts are cancelled after a few years.”

The discussions included dialogue with Azerbaijan’s energy and economy ministers and plans for a regional electricity corridor linking Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan to Europe, which Saková said could help European countries replace coal‑fired power with greener imports.
