Slovakia sets 68-wolf hunting quota for 2026/2027 season

The Slovak Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has set a hunting quota for the 2026/2027 season, permitting the culling of 68 wolves. This quota represents 20 percent of the wolf population's net annual increase.

The distribution of the quota across regions is as follows: Žilina region (23), Banská Bystrica region (22), Prešov region (16), Košice region (4), and Trenčín region (3). The ministry stated that the allocation considers the number of livestock lost to wolves in each region and the extent of areas under year-round protection.

Hunting is permitted from September 1, 2026, until the ministry halts the activity, with a final deadline of January 15, 2027. However, hunting is strictly prohibited in areas with fifth-degree protection, European significance areas, and specific municipalities in the Stará Ľubovňa district. Additionally, hunting is banned in certain border areas near the Czech Republic and within the Pannonian biogeographical region.
