Slovak railways impose speed limits as heat wave threatens train operations

The Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute issued third‑level heat warnings for temperatures that could reach up to 40 °C. The extreme heat is expected to affect both passengers and railway infrastructure.

Železničná spoločnosť Slovensko (ZSSK) warned that high temperatures may overload air‑conditioning systems and cause breakdowns, leading to possible delays. In response, Železnice Slovenskej republiky (ŽSR) have introduced temporary speed restrictions, limiting trains on the most affected sections to 80 km/h, especially on main corridors and international express services. The reduced speed could extend travel times across the network.

Travelers are advised to check current traffic information, allow extra time for journeys, stay hydrated and be prepared for possible carriage changes if air‑conditioning fails. The operator emphasised particular care for children, seniors and people with health conditions.
