Slovakia social insurance: Overview of employee benefits and pension rules

Employees in Slovakia are entitled to various social insurance benefits funded by employer contributions. These include sickness insurance, which covers temporary incapacity for work, maternity leave, care allowances for sick relatives, and pregnancy-related benefits. Additionally, insurance covers unemployment, occupational accidents, and retirement.

Regarding pension increases, the Slovak Social Insurance Agency calculates adjustments for working pensioners based on specific legal formulas. A recent inquiry by Public Defender of Rights Róbert Dobrovodský confirmed that pension increases for those working while receiving a pension are determined by the period of insurance and personal wage points earned during that time. While these calculations may result in lower-than-expected increases for some, the agency's methodology remains in compliance with current social insurance legislation.
