Slovakia implements 50% public transport fare reductions
The Slovak government is implementing significant subsidies for public transportation to mitigate rising fuel costs. A 50% reduction in second-class railway fares, which began in October, is expected to continue through November and potentially December. Prime Minister Robert Fico noted a substantial increase in passenger numbers following the measure, including a 25% year-on-year rise in some instances.
In addition to rail, the subsidy extends to regional bus services and urban public transport in major cities starting October 12. The Žilina Self-Governing Region has expanded this benefit to include passengers who already hold discounted tickets. The total state cost for these transport subsidies is estimated at approximately 13 million euros.
Parallel to these measures, Finance Minister Ladislav Kamenický presented the 2027 draft state budget to Parliament. He described the budget as a compromise that adheres to European Commission fiscal rules without raising taxes on businesses. Kamenický urged coalition members to avoid controversial amendments to ensure the budget passes and prevents a provisional budget scenario. The government aims to maintain financial market confidence while increasing spending on social services, healthcare, education, and transport projects.
