Slovakia to implement automated insurance checks and odometer fraud protections
Slovakia is introducing significant legislative changes regarding vehicle ownership and sales. Starting October 1, 2026, the state will implement automated checks for compulsory third-party liability insurance (PZP). Vehicle owners without valid insurance will face automated fines based on vehicle weight, ranging from €120 for vehicles under 750 kg to €900 for those over 12 tons. Fines can be issued repeatedly every 150 days, with subsequent penalties doubling in amount. To encourage compliance, owners can receive a one-third reduction in the fine if paid within 15 days, or further reductions for securing insurance or removing the vehicle from registration.
Additionally, new regulations targeting odometer fraud are set to take effect in January 2027. Following data from the Vehicle Operating Records Register (RPZV) showing that approximately 17 percent of verified vehicles had manipulated odometers, the law will mandate that sellers who conceal mileage tampering must take the vehicle back and issue a full refund to the customer. While current laws already prohibit the sale of vehicles with manipulated odometers, these new rules provide a direct legal mechanism for consumer redress.
