Slovakia introduces automated insurance fines and digital payment systems

Slovakia is implementing significant regulatory changes regarding vehicle insurance and police fine payments. Under the new LEX PZP law, an automated system will link vehicle registries with insurance databases to detect uninsured vehicles without requiring physical police intervention.

Starting October 2026, if a vehicle remains without mandatory third-party liability insurance (PZP) for more than 30 days, the district office will automatically issue a fine. Fines are scaled by vehicle weight: 120 EUR for trailers under 750 kg, 300 EUR for passenger cars, 600 EUR for trucks up to 12 tons, and 900 EUR for heavy machinery. Failure to insure a vehicle for over 150 days results in doubled fines, and long-term non-compliance can lead to permanent removal from the vehicle registry.

Additionally, the Ministry of Interior is preparing a transition toward an electronic system for recording and paying fines. This change aims to eliminate cash payments directly to police officers in favor of a digital system where each fine is assigned a unique identification number to ensure efficient administration and reduce the workload for law enforcement.
