Slovakia is set to implement a major amendment to its road traffic laws starting September 1, 2026. The changes aim to increase road safety and strengthen respect for traffic regulations.

Drivers facing repeated serious violations will face stricter penalties. After two serious offenses within 12 months, a third violation will require a rehabilitation program, a training course, and a professional competence exam. A fourth violation within the same period will lead to the revocation of the driver's license, requiring further medical and psychological evaluations to regain driving privileges. Notably, these rules now extend to violations committed while riding bicycles or electric scooters.

Pedestrian safety is also being addressed. Pedestrians will have priority as soon as they intend to enter a crossing, but they must monitor traffic and avoid sudden movements. Using mobile phones or headphones in a manner that distracts from traffic while crossing will be restricted. Additionally, riding electric scooters on sidewalks will be prohibited.

Financial penalties will increase for significant speeding offenses, with fines reaching up to 1,300 euros. The law also expands 'objective responsibility,' allowing for fines via automated systems and AI technology that can detect mobile phone usage or failure to wear seatbelts.
