Slovakia to increase minimum wage and implement equal pay laws

Slovakia is implementing significant changes to its labor and wage regulations. Starting in January 2027, the statutory minimum wage will increase to 972 euros per month. This adjustment follows a new calculation mechanism introduced in January 2026, which automatically sets the minimum wage at 60 percent of the average nominal monthly wage from two years prior. Under this system, the minimum wage is expected to exceed the 1,000 euro threshold by 2028.

Additionally, the Equal Remuneration Act, which transposes EU Directive 2023/970, will be in effect as of June 7, 2026. This law requires employers to establish clear, objective, and justifiable criteria for evaluating job positions and determining salaries. While employees performing equal work or work of equal value are entitled to equal pay, differences in remuneration are permitted if justified by factors such as responsibility, complexity, experience, or performance. Companies with 100 or more employees will face specific reporting obligations to the Ministry of Labour, Social Affairs and Family, with larger firms required to provide regular reports.
