Slovakia to join Ukraine claims commission despite Russian warnings

Slovak Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár has affirmed Slovakia's intention to join the agreement establishing the International Claims Commission for Ukraine, regardless of opposition from Russia. Blanár stated that the decision is rooted in upholding international law and ensuring that all damages incurred in Ukraine are properly documented and investigated.

During a televised discussion, Blanár presented a letter received from the Russian Federation regarding the accession process. While the Minister noted that Russia currently claims not to attach significant importance to the matter, opposition MP Mária Kolíková highlighted a warning in the document's final sentence. The letter reportedly states, “In the event of the signing of the agreement by Slovakia, a more decisive reaction from the Russian side cannot be ruled out.”

Kolíková criticized the government's handling of the document, suggesting it demonstrates Russian influence, noting that the cabinet's recent resolution only allows for the possibility of a signature without granting the Minister full authorization to submit the agreement directly to Parliament.
