Slovakia to launch invasive species control in protected areas

Starting this autumn, a new initiative will begin in Slovakia to control and eradicate invasive animal species within 13 protected bird areas. The project is a collaborative effort involving the Slovak Ornithological Society/BirdLife Slovakia, the Slovak Hunting Chamber, and the city of Bratislava.

Funded through the LIFE program, the initiative aims to protect 17 selected bird species from the devastating impact of non-native animals. Target species for eradication include the nutria, American mink, raccoon dog, and stone marten. Experts noted that animal invasions are among the five most significant threats to biodiversity, and monitoring has shown a high prevalence of these species, which negatively impact natural habitats and native bird populations.

The project will utilize local teams formed from hunting ground users to conduct field activities. Beyond immediate eradication, the program seeks to foster long-term cooperation between experts and organizations to ensure the continued protection of Slovakia's natural values and biodiversity.
