Slovakia to propose social media age limit of 16 for children

The Slovak Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Investment, Regional Development and Informatization are preparing a joint legislative proposal to regulate social media access for minors. The proposed law, titled the Integrated System for Protection against Radicalization and Mobilization to Violence, aims to restrict social media access for children under the age of 16.

Minister of Education Tomáš Drucker stated that the initiative seeks to protect youth from radicalization while ensuring the measures are compatible with European Union legal frameworks, such as the Digital Services Act. Drucker emphasized the need for coordinated action with EU neighbors to effectively address the influence of global technology giants, noting that Slovakia lacks the economic leverage to confront these companies alone.

The ministries are currently coordinating their respective proposals to ensure the final solution is professionally grounded, practical, and aligned with existing EU regulations regarding the protection of minors online.
