Slovakia’s average workplace lunch cost hits €9.10, outpacing subsidies

Data from Edenred’s TRC index show that the average amount Slovak employees spend on lunches using employer‑issued meal cards steadied at €9.10 by the end of the first half of 2026. While the recent pace of price growth has slowed, analysts expect a modest rise during the summer months as demand for higher‑quality meals increases.

The highest average spends were recorded in the Nitra region (€9.87) and the Košice region (€9.83). Several other regions, including Prešov, Bratislava, Banská Bystrica and Žilina, posted averages above €9. By contrast, the Trnava region posted the lowest average at €8.15, followed by Trenčín at €7.16. Seasonal peaks were noted in spring, with average expenditures of €9.22 in April and €9.25 in May.

Edenred public‑affairs director Lívia Bachratá noted that even the slower price growth continues to widen the gap between actual lunch costs and the legal minimum employer contribution, meaning many workers must supplement the price from their own pockets. Year‑on‑year, the biggest increase was in Bratislava (+€0.85) and Nitra (+€0.60), while the smallest rises were in Košice and Trnava (+€0.26).
