Slovakia's Fico government criticized over economy and regional elections

Progressive Slovakia leader Michal Šimečka warned that the coalition led by Prime Minister Robert Fico has failed to address the needs of ordinary citizens, citing internal disputes, nepotism, and a deteriorating economy. He highlighted the controversial support given to the steelmaker Slovalco, funded from an environmental fund meant for green transitions, and warned of inadequate preparation for the upcoming NATO summit on defence spending.

In a separate analysis of the ruling Smer‑SD party, journalists noted a lack of energy and clear strategy in its regional election campaigns. The party struggles to field strong candidates in key regions such as Prešov, where internal disagreements over nominees have emerged, and faces criticism for relying on opportunistic nominations rather than robust local leadership.
