Slovak State Moves to Reacquire 17% Stake in Slovenské elektrárne After Mochovce Block Completion

Minister of Economy Denisa Saková announced that the Slovak government will begin negotiations to purchase the remaining 17 percent stake in Slovenské elektrárne (SE) after the fourth block of the Mochovce nuclear plant is commissioned. The transaction could cost from a few hundred million euros up to two‑to‑three billion euros, depending on the final valuation and the private shareholder’s stance.

The state aims to bring the 17 percent back under public ownership to strengthen control over a strategic energy asset. SE’s chief executive Branislav Strýček expects the fourth block to reach full output by the end of this year, with full commercial operation projected for 2027. Current ownership includes Slovak Power Holding B.V. (66 percent, tied to the Czech Energetický a průmyslový holding) and the Slovak Republic, which already holds 34 percent.

Support for the buy‑back was voiced by HLAS‑SD leader Matúš Šutaj Eštok and Prime Minister Robert Fico, who emphasized the strategic importance of retaining control over national energy infrastructure.
