Slovakia's Myjava River Water Quality Declines, Fish Consumption Ban Issued

The Slovak Anglers Union (SRZ) in Senica has warned that fish caught in the Myjava 2b trout fishing area should not be eaten until further notice. The advisory follows a sustained deterioration of water quality downstream of the Turá Lúka wastewater‑treatment plant, where the Slovak Environmental Inspection (SIŽP) reports that discharge still exceeds legal limits.

SIŽP identifies a persistently high concentration of nickel, compounded by ongoing drought and low river flow that limits natural dilution. About five kilometres of the river below the plant remain critically polluted. While biological treatment at the plant is slowly returning to normal operation, the effluent does not yet meet required standards. The inspection continues intensive monitoring and is cooperating with the river‑management authority and the plant operator to restore stable wastewater treatment.

Local anglers are therefore advised to avoid consuming fish from the affected stretch until conditions improve.
