Slovakia National Security Authority warns of cyber threat from radar cameras

Slovakia’s National Security Authority (NBÚ) has issued a warning regarding traffic radar cameras, identifying them as a significant cybersecurity threat. A security analysis revealed risks including issues with communication interface configurations, remote access vulnerabilities, and insufficient software security. The NBÚ specifically highlighted concerns regarding the origin of hardware and software.

Interior Minister Matúš Šutaj Eštok accused the company Soitron of misleading the ministry by claiming the cameras had no Russian origin, stating that analysis found Russian components. The Minister has since terminated cooperation with the firm. In response, Soitron’s CEO, Ondrej Smolár, denied any intentional deception, asserting that the company provided all information available at the time and that the cameras in question were intended solely for software testing and were not meant for full-scale operational use.

Opposition parties, including Progressive Slovakia (PS), have called for the Minister's resignation, citing the severity of the security breach and the potential for unauthorized remote control of the devices.
