Slovakia's nuclear megaproject stalled over CEZ stake dispute

The construction of a new nuclear power plant at Jaslovské Bohunice, a flagship project of Prime Minister Robert Fico’s government, has stalled. Minister of Economy Denisa Saková says the delay stems from the need to resolve the ownership of JESS, the joint Slovak‑Czech venture that will build the plant. Slovakia must purchase the Czech utility CEZ’s 49 % share, but the minister insists on an independent appraisal of the price before the transaction can proceed, calling for additional expert reports.

Both Saková and Fico agree that a state‑owned nuclear source is essential for Slovakia’s energy security, yet Fico has repeatedly urged a faster pace while Saková warns that an unfavorable deal could cost the state tens of millions of euros. The dispute over the CEZ stake remains the main obstacle to moving the project forward.
