Slovakia's opposition and government debate transaction tax and 2027 budget

Opposition leader Michal Šimečka of Progressive Slovakia outlined a program to boost growth, calling for the abolition of the transaction tax, lower tax and contribution burdens, anti‑corruption steps and incentives for housing construction. He warned of a high public‑finance deficit and a difficult 2028 budget, urging stronger communication of the party’s proposals.

Prime Minister Robert Fico, while defending his coalition, referenced similar budget‑related ideas, including the possible removal of the transaction tax. He criticised Hlas party billboard campaigns about a 13th pension, stressed coalition stability, and highlighted foreign‑policy matters such as a prospective US‑Iran peace agreement and the upcoming visit of India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Fico also warned against inflaming Slovak‑Hungarian tensions ahead of Hungarian elections.
