Slovakia's political debate intensifies over hospital climate‑control spending and nuclear plant ownership

Opposition MP Robert Bestro denounced the ruling liberals for spending on non‑essential programmes such as a COVID‑19 lottery and MOM‑ks, arguing that the money could have financed climate‑controlled rooms in hospitals. He calculated that the funds could have equipped about 400,000 rooms with air‑conditioning and an additional 1.3 million rooms if spent efficiently. Bestro also questioned the opposition’s record on hospital climate‑control projects, asking how many equipped buildings they have built.

Separately, Prime Minister Robert Fico discussed the upcoming fourth block at the Mochovce nuclear power plant and the six‑month decision window for the state to increase its share in Slovenské elektrárne. He suggested the government consider buying a larger stake, currently around one‑third, potentially up to half, while also commenting skeptically on the likelihood and usefulness of a planned referendum on the issue.
