Tomáš Taraba removed from Slovak Deputy PM and Environment Minister posts
The Slovak Parliament has voted to remove Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Environment Tomáš Taraba from office. The decision, supported by the opposition and members of the coalition Slovak National Party (SNS), has raised concerns regarding the stability of Prime Minister Robert Fico’s ruling coalition.
Taraba stated that he had informed Prime Minister Fico via telephone of his intention to resign on September 30, regardless of the parliamentary outcome. He expressed dissatisfaction with serving in a government where his removal was influenced by a pact between the SNS and the Progressive Slovakia (PS) party. Following his removal, Taraba intends to remain in Parliament as an independent MP, vowing to vote on legislation based on its merit for the citizens of Slovakia rather than political loyalty.
Political tensions remain high. SNS leader Andrej Danko accused Taraba of attempting to blackmail the government, while PS leader Michal Šimečka criticized the former minister, calling his removal a matter of professional failure. Taraba has indicated plans to develop a new political project aimed at connecting citizens who are not established political figures.
