Slovenia addresses drone safety and mountain rescue costs

Slovenia is addressing safety and cost concerns related to increasing tourism and technology use. Following unauthorized drone flights near rescue helicopters at the University Medical Centre Ljubljana, the facility is planning to implement a detection system to identify operators and prevent interference with emergency services. Drone usage in the country is governed by European regulations (2019/947 and 2019/945), which categorize aircraft by risk and require registration for certain models.

Simultaneously, the rise in mountain tourism has led to discussions regarding the rising costs of mountain rescue operations. Currently, these expenses are covered by Slovenian taxpayers. Due to an increase in accidents involving unprepared visitors, particularly foreign tourists, there are proposals to introduce mandatory insurance for foreigners to cover rescue costs. The Alpine Association of Slovenia has also suggested solutions to manage mountain pressure and protect volunteer rescuers from burnout and safety risks caused by frequent emergency calls.
