Slovenia and Croatia debate transport and tolling models

In Slovenia, political debate has intensified regarding public transport reforms. While opposition members propose expanding the system to include free travel for students and high schoolers, critics warn of financial instability that could threaten existing free passes for retirees. The discussion highlights various European models, such as the universal free transit in Luxembourg and Malta, or the age-based subsidies used in Slovakia and Hungary.

Meanwhile, Croatia is set to implement the Crolibertas system in March 2027. This €160.5 million technological overhaul will replace traditional toll booths with a kilometer-based charging system using cameras and electronic devices. Although the move aims to improve traffic flow, concerns remain regarding high costs compared to neighboring Slovenia's vignette system, as well as technical challenges regarding license plate readability in poor weather.
