Slovenia begins signature collection for local elections

The process for collecting signatures to support candidates for Slovenia's upcoming local elections has officially begun. These elections are scheduled to take place on November 15.

Both political parties and individual voters can submit candidacies or lists. For independent candidates, a specific number of signatures from voters in a given electoral unit is required. The law mandates a minimum of 30 and a maximum of 1,000 signatures, depending on the municipality.

Monika Kirbiš Rojs, the Minister for Local Self-Government, Cohesion, and Regional Development, noted a significant change in the rules compared to the previous election cycle. The number of signatures required for mayoral candidates and municipal council candidates has now been unified. Previously, mayoral candidates required a percentage based on voter turnout, with different minimum and maximum thresholds.

The final list of candidates will be confirmed on October 15, which serves as the deadline for all submissions. This marks the ninth local election in independent Slovenia.
