Slovenia celebrates 70 years of national plowing competitions

Slovenia is celebrating the 70th anniversary of its national plowing competitions. An official ceremony was held in Sveti Jurij ob Ščavnici ahead of the 69th State Plowing Competition and the 31st State Championship for biotechnology school students.

Minister of Agriculture Janez Cigler Kralj emphasized the importance of professional soil preparation, particularly as farmers face increasing challenges from droughts and high temperatures. He noted that proper plowing is essential for moisture retention, soil fertility, and national food security.

During the event, local officials also addressed the economic challenges facing the sector. Mayor Andrej Vrzel highlighted the need for a fairer subsidy system that supports small family farms rather than focusing primarily on large-scale agricultural operations.
