Slovenia proposes stricter migration and integration rules

The Slovenian Ministry of the Interior and Public Administration has proposed amendments to the Aliens Act that would significantly alter migration and integration policies. One major change involves extending the period required for citizens of third countries to apply for family reunification from one year to three years.

Additionally, the proposal introduces a co-financing model for Slovenian language courses. While these courses were previously free, the new amendment suggests the state would cover 60 percent of the costs, leaving participants to pay the remaining 40 percent. To obtain a permanent residence permit, foreigners must demonstrate basic proficiency (level A2) in the Slovenian language.

Non-governmental organizations have expressed concern regarding these measures. Critics argue that the extended reunification period infringes upon the right to private and family life and may discourage foreign workers, particularly those from Asia and the Balkans, from choosing Slovenia. Experts also warn that charging for language courses could create barriers for socially vulnerable migrants.
