Slovenia development law faces referendum

The Slovenian National Assembly passed the Law on Intervention Measures for the Development of Slovenia on May 11, 2026. The legislation aims to increase economic competitiveness and ease the cost of living by lowering taxes on essential foodstuffs and certain energy products, simplifying processes for small businesses, and providing full pensions for retirees working.

However, the law is currently facing a referendum process initiated by opposition parties, including Freedom, SD, and the Left, supported by various labor unions. Opponents argue the measures will result in a one billion euro deficit in the state budget. Tax expert Ivan Simič has contested this figure, estimating the actual reduction in tax revenue to be between 200 and 300 million euros.

Critics of the current political landscape have also raised concerns regarding transparency in public sector wage increases and the fiscal impact of previous government policies.
