Slovenia drought impacts grape yields and salt production
Severe drought conditions in Slovenia are significantly impacting agricultural production. In the regions of Dolenjska, Bela Krajina, and Posavje, experts from the Novo mesto Agricultural and Forestry Institute warn that grape yields could drop by as much as 40 percent.
Martin Blažič, deputy president of the Trška Gora Winegrowers Association, noted that the drought has particularly affected younger vineyards, with some vines and shoots drying out. The lack of water is expected to result in an earlier harvest—potentially three weeks ahead of schedule—and lower wine quality due to increased acidity and lower sugar content, specifically impacting varieties such as Sauvignon, Pinot, and Kerner.
In the coastal region of Sečovlje, the heat and lack of precipitation are influencing salt production. Production manager Matjaž Lužnik stated that accelerated evaporation is driving producers to target a yield of 1,300 tons of salt for the current season.
