Slovenia drought strains water supplies for residents and bees

Ongoing drought conditions in Slovenia are creating significant challenges for both human water supplies and local ecosystems. In regions like Polhograjci, firefighters from PGD Sora are being deployed to transport water via tankers to prevent taps from running dry, a temporary measure that highlights the vulnerability of local water systems.

The drought is also impacting agriculture and nature. Beekeepers report that bees are increasingly seeking water near homes and livestock to drink and to cool their hives. Vlado Vogrinec, honorary president of the Styrian Beekeeping Association, advises providing bees with standing water and floating objects like wood or bark to prevent them from drowning. He also notes that beekeepers must provide supplemental food, such as sugar syrup, as bees consume their stored reserves more quickly during heatwaves.

Authorities are emphasizing the need for long-term infrastructure planning and responsible water usage, as reliance on emergency services for drinking water is not a sustainable solution for future climate patterns.
