Slovenia experiences political tension following Sovereignty Day celebrations

Recent celebrations of Slovenia's Sovereignty Day in Koper have sparked political controversy and accusations of mismanagement. The holiday, marking the 1991 departure of the Yugoslav People's Army, faced criticism after a public broadcast was not provided in the Italian language, leading to claims of minority rights violations.

Government officials have characterized these complaints as political maneuvering. Critics of the handling of the event noted that organizers appeared to lack decisiveness when faced with pressure regarding bilingualism requirements.

Separately, government representatives have expressed concerns regarding increasing political polarization in Slovenia. Sebastjan Jeretič, acting director of the Government Office for Communication, and Minister Borut Rončević have suggested that the presence of the Levica party in Parliament has accelerated a toxic style of political communication and deepened societal divisions.
