Slovenia faces energy and environmental strain from drought

Slovenia is facing severe consequences from ongoing drought and extreme heatwaves. The lack of water is impacting various sectors, including energy production. The Krško Nuclear Power Plant has seen reduced output due to cooling water requirements, costing Gen ergo approximately one million euros every three days as they must purchase electricity elsewhere.

In urban areas, the heat is causing significant damage to greenery. Reports highlight the struggle of newly planted trees in commercial parking lots, where inadequate irrigation and poor soil conditions lead to high mortality rates. While urban greening plans exist on paper, a lack of maintenance and watering during drought periods often results in the failure of these environmental initiatives.
