Slovenia faces mountain water shortages and tourism pressure

High-altitude mountain huts across Slovenia are facing a critical water shortage due to prolonged drought. Many huts, such as Kamniško sedlo and Kredarica, rely exclusively on rainwater collection. Consequently, water usage has been strictly limited; some locations have suspended sink water and showering facilities, providing only disinfectants and bottled water instead. The Alpine Association of Slovenia is urging hikers to use water sparingly.

In addition to water scarcity, hut keepers are reporting an increase in litter left by visitors. Authorities emphasize that hikers should carry all waste back down to the valleys to prevent wind from spreading trash around the mountains.

Simultaneously, regions like Lepena and Bovško are struggling with extreme tourism pressure. In the Lepena valley, particularly near the Soča River, summer heat has led to significant traffic and general chaos. Local municipal councils have held emergency sessions to demand increased oversight from the police and Triglav National Park to manage the impact of mass tourism on local communities.
