Slovenia sees brief cooling, ongoing drought and traffic snarls
After a nine‑day heat wave, Slovenia is expected to experience a short‑lived temperature drop as afternoon and evening showers bring cooler air. The Agency of the Republic of Slovenia for Environment (Arso) lowered the fire‑risk warning from red to orange, while the red alert remains for the Primorska region. Temperatures are forecast between 26 °C and 32 °C, reaching up to 35 °C in Goriška and the Slovenian Istria.
The country remains in a state of hydro‑meteorological drought. Inspectors are intensifying control of water taken from streams, prioritising illegal extraction and imposing fines of €400‑€1 200 for individuals and higher penalties for legal entities. The drought has already caused severe agricultural damage, with some farms reporting up to 90 % loss of crops such as grasses, fodder, corn, potatoes and vegetables.
Heavy traffic congestion is affecting major highways. Accidents on the coastal motorway between Unče and Vrhnika, as well as other incidents, have created delays of up to an hour and a half for drivers travelling from Koper to Ljubljana. The Dars traffic‑information centre warns of very high traffic density this weekend, and the Agency for Road Safety (AVP) is running a “Safe in Summer” campaign, distributing water and safety leaflets at selected rest areas.
