Banque de France cuts 2026 growth forecast amid energy price volatility

The Banque de France has lowered its 2026 economic growth forecast for France to 0.4 percent, down from 0.5 percent. Despite the downward revision, chief economist Xavier Debrun emphasized the resilience of the French economy, stating it is not experiencing a structural “décrochage” (decoupling or collapse). The central bank cited several factors for the slowdown, including weak private consumption, cautious corporate investment, energy shocks related to Middle East tensions, and the impact of summer heatwaves.

Simultaneously, energy markets are experiencing significant volatility. In Slovenia, diesel prices have reached record highs, nearing 2 euros per liter due to global market tensions and supply issues in the Mediterranean. In Germany, analysts warn that diesel could potentially approach 3 euros per liter if the current energy crisis persists. Amidst these rising fuel costs, Tesla has responded by lowering fast-charging prices at its Superchargers in Germany to compete with domestic electricity rates.

In France, rising gas and oil prices continue to pressure industrial sectors. High energy costs have led to significant consumption drops in the paper and automotive industries, threatening employment and competitiveness. While heating oil prices have seen a brief period of stability, regional price disparities remain high.
