Slovenia faces referendum on development law and parliamentary leadership dispute

Slovenia is facing significant political developments involving the Constitutional Court and the National Assembly. The Constitutional Court has allowed a referendum regarding the Intervention Act for the Development of Slovenia (ZIURS). This omnibus law, passed on May 11, 2026, by a coalition including NSi, SLS, Fokus, Demokrati, and Resni.ca, aims to address the energy crisis by lowering taxes, increasing net wages, and raising pensions. While proponents argue it will boost competitiveness and investment, labor unions and left-wing NGOs have opposed it.

Simultaneously, political tensions are rising regarding the leadership of the National Assembly. Parties including Svoboda, SD, and Levica have proposed the dismissal of Speaker Zoran Stevanović, alleging he violated the constitution by failing to protect the rights of the opposition. This dispute is linked to the upcoming referendum on amendments to the parliamentary inquiry law, which has delayed the establishment of certain investigative commissions.
