Slovenia features over 6,000 settlements with diverse names

Slovenia contains more than 6,000 settlements and 10,000 streets, many of which feature unique or unusual names. According to data from the Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia (SURS), approximately four-fifths of the country's settlements have unique names, while the remainder share names with other locations. Common names include Gradišče and Pristava.

Several Slovenian settlements share names with international capitals, such as Jeruzalem, Dunaj (Vienna), and Rim (Rome), though they possess significantly smaller populations. Other notable shared names include Podgorica and Bratislavce.

In terms of size and population, Ljubljana remains the largest settlement and capital, with over 293,000 residents at the start of the year. Maribor follows as the second-largest city with approximately 98,000 residents. Together, these two cities account for about 18 percent of the national population.

Demographic extremes include Kerinov Grm, which is noted as the most densely populated yet smallest settlement, and 58 settlements that currently have no inhabitants. The settlement with the shortest name is Ig, while the longest is Nova Gora nad Slovensko Bistrico, consisting of 28 characters.
